Packing ideas for a perfect holiday

Here are a few handy guidelines.

    Think ahead

Don’t leave it until the night before your trip to start packing. A little planning is essential.

Start by drawing up a checklist of essential items you can’t afford to leave behind. If you don’t feel like being caught in a blizzard without a ski jacket then check the long-range forecast for your destination so you know what to expect.

    Organise outfits

Time to sound a bit like a hippy… visualise the things you’ll be doing while away to help you choose the outfits you’ll need. Think of all the activities you’ll be doing, not just the number of days you’ll be away.

For the sake of versatility, stick to neutral colours such as white, black, grey and navy, which can be worn in several combinations, and then throw in a few colourful accessories.

Laying out everything you’ll be packing on a bed allows you to see if outfits work. It also gives you an idea of the space you’re going to need to fit it all in.

If you’re flying and worried about excess baggage charges, a sneaky tip is to wear your heaviest clothes – your biggest boots and chunkiest jacket – on the plane. (It would be a bit rude to ask you to step on the scales!)

    Get on the case

A small bag is good for weekends and as carry-on luggage, but for longer trips, a lightweight suitcase with rigid sides will best protect your belongings from baggage handlers with a beef.

Put a note inside your bag with your contact details in case your luggage tag falls off.

    Mix it up

Spread essential items across two or more bags, or swap with a travelling partner. That way you’ll survive in the event your suitcase lands in Bangkok while you’re waiting by a carousel in Bali.

Spare toiletries and medication, and a change of clothes, shoes and underwear will provide some relief while you pursue your lost luggage.

Never banish anything you would hate to lose to the cargo hold – keep it in your hand luggage.

    Trim toiletries

Toiletries can be heavy, so instead of lugging that 500ml bottle of conditioner opt for a travel size, or simply decant some into a smaller container.

Packing toiletries in your hand luggage will make your suitcase lighter, but if you are flying then remember to check the airline’s rules on nail scissors, aerosols and liquids or they may be confiscated before you board.

    Bring footwear to heel

Shoes are bulky and can weigh a tonne so take as few pairs as possible. Put them in plastic bags to avoid soiling clothes, and fill them with socks to save space.

    Let it all out

When you arrive at your destination, hang any crumpled garments in the bathroom and run a hot shower.

It’s a great way to unwind after a long journey, and the steam will help remove the creases from your clothes and smooth the way to the start of a great holiday.
