Airport parking: your options
Index
If you take time to check out your parking options before you arrive at the check-in gate, you needn’t be landed with a soaring parking bill.
The long and the short of it
Your first option is short-term parking. This is generally the most conveniently located, but it’s way too pricey (eg $16 per hour at Sydney airport) to use for anything but quick stops to see off or pick up passengers.
Long-term parking is the only sensible option for anything beyond a day trip, although this may mean a longer walk to the terminal or a short wait for an airport shuttle bus.
Booking long-term parking online is much cheaper than buying it at the airport, guarantees you a space and avoids the hassle of paying on exit.
Long-term parking is generally charged in 24-hour blocks, so when booking bear in mind staying for one extra hour may see you billed for another day – and no one wants that.
Fly the coop
The airport is not your only parking option. Many companies offer off-site parking near our major airports. They typically charge less than half the cost of the official car park, and provide a free shuttle service to the front door of the terminal.
Remember this, even if one car park is the cheapest for a three-day stay it may not offer the best deal over a week, so channel your inner academic and do your research.
Also, bear in mind that off-site car parks often require booking at least 24 hours in advance, and may require you to leave your car keys with them.
Most offer undercover parking for a little extra. If you’re travelling during the storm season, think of this as an insurance policy against hail damage.
Although some car parks offer advance payment discounts, it’s best to check the cancellation rules – they may provide full or partial refunds if you give them enough notice.
If you’re a member of a motoring body such as Victoria’s RACV, you qualify for special discounts at some parking facilities.
Arrive in style
If you have small children or elderly passengers, consider using the airport’s valet service – it’s time to class things up a bit!
For a small fee (eg $26 at Brisbane airport) you can leave your car close to the terminal, and they’ll park it for you. Ask your airline about their valet service too.
Many valet services and off-site parking garages also provide a car wash and even a detailing service.
What could be nicer welcome back from a long journey than a sparkling clean vehicle to carry you home?
