When you think of a tourist park or camping ground, you probably aren’t thinking five star resort.

Get out and about

Staying in the comfort of your tourist or holiday park is fine but, they are generally close to beaches, rivers, national parks and bushland that deserves exploration.

Bushwalking is one of the best ways to take in surroundings not accessible by car. You’ll want to protect yourself from the raging Aussie sun though, so throw on an Akubra.

Tourist parks make a great base to go surfing or hiking and the park office will be full of brochures advertising what else is on offer.

Catch your own dinner

Nothing says camping like fishing. The satisfaction that comes with eating fresh fish, reeled in with your own two hands is unrivaled.

Star light, star bright

Building a campfire together (after checking local fire restrictions), toasting marshmallows and -it’s a bit corny – but singing a few tunes and sharing scary stories can make for some unforgettable memories.

Bring along some binoculars and try to spot constellations – the kids will love this.

When camping in the Australian outback you should never get bored, but as a fail-safe pack a Frisbee, a deck of cards, underwater cameras, a kayak, or whatever floats your boat (pardon the pun.)
