Reusing old bricks can be a tempting solution to save on costs. It is also sometimes necessary for the restoration of old brick masonry that you do not want to lose.
While it is definitely possible to reuse old bricks, there are some precautions you should be aware of.
In order to reuse old bricks, you must remove the old mortar. If it is not cleaned properly, a poor bond of the new mortar may result and that leaves the bricks open to water penetration. The task of removing mortar from used brick is a highly labour intensive process that is very hard on the knuckles and can cause damage to the brick. Mortar used to be a lot softer, so if you find very old bricks the mortar may be easier to remove. However, beware that older bricks may respond differently to the newer, harder mortars.
Be careful when reusing bricks that you use bricks that are suitable for the intended purpose. For example, some bricks that were used for inside walls, or the backup bricks, are not of sufficient quality to withstand external use, such as for a retaining wall. Also, old brick can sometimes be flaky or brittle from age and weather exposure, so be sure to check the quality before you purchase it.
It is, of course, possible to reuse bricks, and is even sometimes necessary to do so, especially if you are working on a restoration project. Simply make sure that the bricks are cleaned properly and tested carefully before putting them into use. Also check building codes in the area for any restrictions on using salvaged bricks.
It would make sense to contact a mason or bricklayer for at least a consult on your project before you go ahead and end up half way through only to find the bricks are unsuitable.
