When engaging a bricklayer to work for you, you need to check their references and ask to see examples of their work, just as you would with any other tradesperson.
History
Don’t be afraid to ask to see examples of a bricklayers past work. They can often refer you to an address to see premises that they have previously worked on, and some have also undertaken work in public areas where you can see there workmanship close up. Most tradespeople have references from past clients, some of whom will allow you to come and inspect the work at their premises.
Qualifications
Bricklayers are required to undertake a four year apprenticeship like other building trade apprentices. Check with your bricklayer to ensure that they have completed their apprenticeship and are fully qualified in the trade. Using a fully qualified tradesperson will ensure a certain quality of workmanship and will help ensure the integrity of the structure, whether it’s a house or a retaining wall.
What makes a good bricklayer?
- Practical Work – a good bricklayer will enjoy working outdoors and won’t be afraid to do the hard work.
- Technical Knowledge – bricklayers should have a good technical understanding of structures and measurements.
- Heights – bricklayers may be required to work at heights, a good bricklayer will be comfortable and experienced at this.
- Co-ordination – bricklayers need to have good hand and eye co-ordination. A good bricklayer will move smoothly and quickly.
- Creative – some structures and brick masonry work require a bricklayer to be creative and not to be afraid of trying new things.
- On Time – a good and professional bricklayer will turn up when they say they will and complete the job in a timely manner.
- Safety – a qualified bricklayer knows the importance of safety and will always follow safety guidelines including scaffolding.
Examples of work that you may want to inspect
- Homes – ask for a list of recent houses that the bricklayer has worked on. Drive past and have a look.
- Walls – retaining walls and interior feature walls, ask for photos or location details.
- Fireplaces – ask to see photos of fireplaces or outdoor ovens that they have built. Look for creative twists.
- Feature walls – look for quality and attention to detail, it is supposed to be a feature so should be spot on.
- Paving – bricklayers also install paving for paths and driveways. This can be easy to see so ask for examples and locations.
The best way to know if the bricklayer you are going to engage is experienced is simply to ask the question. You may have had the bricklayer referred to you by someone else, ask to see work they did for that person. Many bricklayers have also been employed by larger building contractors, they may be able to give references as well show you examples of work.
