One of the main advantages of aluminium windows is their low maintenance and high life expectancy. This low maintenance is one of the main reasons they remain so attractive to home builders and to home owners considering replacing existing windows.
Wooden Windows
When we think of windows we tend to think of two types, timber windows and aluminium windows. There are other forms of windows but these two types make up the majority of domestic windows. Of these two types, aluminium windows are definately easier to maintain than their timber counterparts.
From the Start
Wooden windows are heavier than aluminium and therefore, right from the start at installation, they require more work and care. A large wooden window can weigh up to four times more than a modern aluminium window and takes more manpower to lift into place at installation. So right from the start, aluminium windows have the uppper hand.
Wooden windows need regular maintenance, this includes:
- Internal painting – unlike aluminium windows which are now routinely finished in designer finishes, wooden windows need detailed painting internally.
- External painting – wooden windows, whether in a timber or brick home, need regular external painting and sealing to protect against the weather and elements.
- Weights and pulleys – older wooden windows often included a weight and pulley opening system. These systems required extensive work if broken and components could be expensive to replace.
- Air tight – as wooden windows tend to shrink, expand and warp over time, their weather proof surroundings can be compromised.
- Cracks – if there are cracks around the window frames then windows will let in cold and heat and raise your bills. These cracks will need attention.
- Sealant – the seal around a window glazing needs attention on a regular basis or the window won’t be waterproof and the glazing may need replacing.
- Wood rot – if windows aren’t maintained properly over their life, they can start to deteriorate and develop rot and mildew issues.
- Movement – because wooden windows shrink and expand, fittings such as latches and locks may need readjustment on a regular basis to ensure ongoing effectiveness.
The look and feel of old wooden windows is unbeatable. The look can’t be replicated exactly and even the sound of them opening and closing is unique. Modern aluminium windows are much more maintenance friendly and don’t require the same level of time and care as older wooden windows.
