Fight boredom with creative floor tiles in your bathroom! Be inspired by our decorative tiling ideas and break with tradition. Bathroom floor tiling is becoming more creative.

We look at decorative and unusual tiling options to revamp your bathroom.

If the thought of retiling your bathroom floor bores you to tears, it’s time to get creative. Combining unusual patterns and colours in your bathroom tiling can create a modern and personalised feel, says Melbourne interior designer Loretta Daily.

To really make a statement, Loretta suggests using custom-made bathroom tiles. "Lots of places now offer custom tile designs and I’ve seen some results that are just breathtaking," she says. "Getting your tiles custom made gives you the opportunity to create a real work of art in your bathroom and guarantees your look will be like no other."

But while handmade tiles can look great, Loretta warns that they are often expensive and may not offer a wide range of materials. "Getting your tiles custom made is really a luxury, and is not something that you would do on a tight budget," she says. "Custom tiles can be made of different materials but are most commonly made of clay, because it is easiest to sculpt."

"Laying floor tiles in the bathroom can be the most tedious and expensive part of renovating a bathroom, so it doesn’t hurt to think outside the box a little," Loretta says. "For some reason there seems to be this fear of venturing away from the classic porcelain white tile, and that’s a shame because there are so many other options out there."

Another way to create a unique look in bathroom tiling and flooring is to use shaped tiles. "Shaped tiles are great because they can give you the appearance of a stained-glass window and completely change the finished look," Loretta says.

Shaped tiles are not rectangular, except for those used on the perimeter, and are usually made of clay. "The reason they look so different is because the grout lines follow the contour of the design, rather than having the look broken up by rectangular lines," she says. "So you end up with a much softer, polished finish, which can be just beautiful."

If you just want a splash of personality without getting too daring, Loretta suggests speckling the floor with randomly placed coloured floor tiles in the bathroom. "I think coloured ceramic or porcelain tiles are a great way to highlight the floor area without completely changing the look," she says.

"My best advice is to let your bathroom floor tiling reflect your personality, because there’s no reason why all bathrooms have to look the same."
