Choosing the right pool ladder

Pool ladders are a useful, flexible and, in terms of safety, becoming an increasingly important addition to the swimming pool. There’s a model to fit almost any type, be it above-ground or in-ground, concrete or fibreglass, shallow or deep. Designed for increased safety and ease of entry into the pool, ladders can also be a less permanent or more affordable alternative to inbuilt steps. "Many pools don’t have inbuilt steps, so ladders provide that flexibility," says pool supplier Mark Dean. "You can pretty much place them wherever you want."

There are a few different types of ladder on the market. Some need to be mounted and installed at the time of pool construction, while others can be retrofitted. Some pre-moulded swimming pool may have grooves in place where a ladder can be fitted, making installation a little easier, so check around the bottom of the pool before you do anything else. Failing that, you may need to drill holes in the bottom of the pool and the decking for firm installation. How you go about it will depend on the type of pool interior and decking you have.

The most common type of pool ladder is the classic ladder style, much like the kind you’ll find at the local swimming pool. These are usually made from resilient stainless steel, with rubber steps for added grip, and suit most types of pools. Mark says there are some differences between above- and in-ground models. "Ladders come in two-, three- or four-step models, depending on the depth of the water and how long they need to be," explains Mark. "Different models can be mounted in different ways, depending on the type of pool and whether it has a narrow or wide coping. Alternatively, they can be bolted to a timber deck." There are even models that emulate staircase-style steps for a bit more visual appeal. These are usually made from moulded resin.

Where you choose to place the ladder may very well dictate which type of hand rail you opt for. There are a surprising number of styles to consider. Looped, triangular grab rails provide a variety of places to grip and are a good choice for a family with a range of needs. For younger swimmers who need something small and easy to grab, or if your pool is squeezed into a tight spot, narrower, more discreet, U-shaped hand rails can do the same job without taking up too much space. While there are plenty of models on the market, remember that ladders and rails are there to provide safety. A shoddy installation or cheap model increases the risk of accidents. Check models for sturdiness, shop around and spend that little bit extra if you need to. A quality swimming pool ladder should last the lifetime of your pool.
