A leaking toilet can not only be super annoying but if left too long, can mean you wind up wasting a lot of our precious Australian water!

If you don’t enjoy the unrelenting sound of a toilet cistern leaking and the idea of wasting water, then read on.

In this article, we explore the five tips you can try to ensure your toilet stops leaking so you can flush your toilet with confidence.

What does it mean when my toilet is leaking?

Often a leaking toilet can be caused by a fairly simple issue – the washer in the cistern is worn out and needs replacing.

The washer performs a vital function in the cistern. When the washer is worn, it causes a leak that will occur when you flush the toilet, and also when not in use. This often leads to an increase in water usage and a higher water bill for you too!

To fix the leaking toilet cistern, you simply need to find where the outlet and inlet valves are. An inlet valve is what shuts off the toilet, so it doesn’t ‘run’ when it doesn’t need to. You can then replace the washer and tighten the nut that holds everything together.

Tips for fixing a leaking toilet cistern

1. Check the flap that lets the water in and out of the cistern
As a starting point, you can check if the flapper is stuck open in your toilet cistern, this would be a reason for why your toilet is leaking and you are getting issues. The chain in the arm can be caught on something in the cistern, which can be causing a leak to occur. By adjusting the flap carefully you could fix the issue and get you back to normal.
2. Not enough water in the toilet
If you don’t have enough water in the toilet, this can cause issues with the water value. Check the water line by properly adding water to the cistern. Then, turn it on correctly to ensure the toilet will work as required.
3. Have a quick check of the drain of the toilet
You could have a blockage in your toilet, which results in leakage. Have a look at the drainage or get a plumber in to take a look at this. A range of factors could cause a blockage, and you should call in a plumber to check for a blockage in your drain – as this could be a much larger issue altogether.
4. Check the value that floats in the cistern
There is a floating valve in the cistern that will ensure the running of the water stops. If you have a quick look at this, you can see if the valve is turning off or continuing to run.
5. Broken seal in the seal of the pipe
Sometimes, if there is a break in the seal you will have issues with your toilet cistern leaking. A quick check of this will let you know if you need to replace the seal. Older toilets will have issues with the seal as it is just general wear and tear and can be fixed or replaced by a plumber.
