Glaziers love double glazing, and it’s not because they can cost up to double the price of regular windows. It’s because it’s an amazing product that does so much to add comfort to your home.

Increasingly popular, double glazed windows are essential to help conserve heating in winter and keep cooling costs down – plus they block out excess noise, so come into their own if you live on a busy street.  

Double glazed windows are two panes of glass with a vacuum between them. The trapped air creates a pocket of insulation which prevents heat loss or gain through the window.

That means that double glazing keeps the heat in during winter and the heat out in summer. It also reduces noise pollution and condensation. However it doesn’t insulate against radiant heat, which means if the low winter sun hits your north-facing windows it will still warm the inside of your house.

Sometimes the vacuum between the panes of glass is filled with gases such as nitrogen or argon. These slow-moving gases are denser than air, so they reduce the transfer of temperature between inside and outside even further. This increases the effectiveness and thermal performance of the glass.

Sometimes a clear laminate is placed between the two panes of glass. This increases the strength and safety of the glass. In other applications, you can get thermal glass with a thin membrane that will cut down UV radiation.
