The time frame that you will experience from the ordering of your garage to its installation will vary. If you require the door for security or containment reasons you need to investigate the timelines before you dismantle your current door or system.
What’s in a Door
Garage doors come in a number of different forms and therefore contain different components. All garage doors contain the obvious, a door, but come in hinged, roller and tilt formats. Each of these different types will come will different frame or hinge hardware, and can be purchased in remote or manual styles.
Colour my World
Garage doors come in many colours. The most common colours are those known as "Colorbond" colours but doors can also be sprayed to order at many suppliers. Most doors are made as single but they are also available as doubles and if your frame and other infrastructure allow, may be available in bigger sizes as well. Finishes of garage doors are varied and need not be the standard "roller door" look. You can order doors with many different modern finishes that will complement the finish of your house.
What can affect the time frame?
- Where you buy – if you buy from a retailer they may have to order the item in, a wholesaler will have more in stock but a manufacturer may have to make it.
- Standard – some doors are made in standard sizes. If the frame you have fits a standard door your door may be more readily available and your time frame shorter.
- Timing – many manufacturers shut down over the Christmas and New Year period. If you order your door close to this period you may encounter a longer turnaround than at other times of the year.
- Installation – if you order your door through the company that will be installing it you may find that you get a smoother end to end experience but you may also find that it is quicker.
- Location – if you live in a remote area, shipping times will add time onto your turn around and may cause delays.
Don’t forget to consider…
- If you are building a house through a contractor, check to see if the garage door is included in your package.
- The height of your door frame will dictate what you can transport through the door so make sure you have enough height to fit a caravan or boat if you need to.
- If you have children make sure you get a door that has safety built into the system.
- Remotes are better if they are installed from the start so if you want a remote system, do it at the start.
- Get a professional measure and quote. If you measure yourself and you get it wrong the door may not be returnable.
Most of us use our garage doors for more than just an entry to the place we store our cars. We use them as an alternative entry to our homes, a dog containment line and a barrier between our privacy and the world. If you are looking to replace your door, make sure you are aware of the time-frame involved so you aren’t without a vital part of your family’s security.
