Before entering into a contract or other work agreement with a fencing contractor, you should check that the contractor is proplery qualified and accredited.
These qualification and accreditations ensure that the contractor, or the company that contractor represents, is compliant with the building services regulations in your state or territory and holds the necessary qualifications and accreditations to provide fencing services.
Fence contractors are required to be licensed under the building services authority act of your state or territory in order to legally carry out some types of fencing work. Authorities such as this are in place to regulate best practice fencing work to ensure the health and safety of workers and the general public. A contractor who constructs a fence without the appropriate license is committing an offence under the law and can be penalised with a fine of up to tens of thousands of dollars.
Not all fences require accreditation but for fences where the safety of the public is at stake, such as (but not limited to) around swimming pools, substations, playgrounds or schools, your fencing contractor will need to be able to comply with the appropriate authority to carry out the work. Occupational health and safety regulations are in place to protect you, the consumer, from substandard work practices and potential liability in the eventuation of accident due to unsafe practices.
