Outdoor security lights: How effective are they?

Generally speaking, outdoor security lights can help keep thieves at bay (plus they’re great for stopping you from walking into icky spider webs). However, they’re not fail proof – placement plays a major role.
It’s a good idea to use security lighting in areas where the light can be seen by you, a security camera, or your neighbours. This makes it clear to an intruder that their actions won’t go unnoticed. However, if you’re using outdoor lighting in areas that are obscured from view, this could be helping to light up a potential break-in spot.
There are a number of options when it comes to installing lights on your property, so take a moment to weigh up the pros and cons of each before you make the call.
Motion sensor lights
Stop intruders in their tracks by lighting them up like they’re on stage with motion sensor lights that switch on at the first sign of movement (we can’t promise it will stop the spiders, though).
The main benefits of a motion sensor security light are that it won’t bump up your power bill by remaining on all night long, and it won’t bug you or your neighbours with bright lights coming through the window when trying to sleep.
The only downside to motion sensors is that they can be a little more pricey.
Solar security lights
Harness the power of the sun and use it against the nefarious of your neighbourhood with solar security lights.
There’s no need to worry about wiring, and you certainly won’t need to worry about the effect solar lights might have on your power bills. The only real downside is that there is limited battery power for solar, so the lights might not stay on all night if it’s been a cloudy day. That said, motion sensor solar lights can mitigate this as they only create light when it’s needed.
Outdoor sensor lights – LED
LED security lights are a fan favourite as they practically last forever (many offer lifespans in the tens of thousands of hours), and as they don’t create heat, they won’t boost your power bill, either. Plus, without mercury or lead inside the bulb, they’re also an environmentally friendly option.
Again, LED lights can be a more expensive option at the outset, but can offer savings down the road as you won’t be replacing those bulbs any time soon.
