Wax vs permanent hair removal
Index
What is the difference between wax and permanent hair removal techniques and which one is right for you? Many women use waxing as a method of removing unwanted hair on the face, legs, underarms and bikini line. Men also regularly use waxing to remove hair on the chest, back and legs.
Waxing for hair removal
Waxing is a process of using hot or cold wax to pull out the unwanted hair by the root. It can be quite painful and is not permanent and will only last 4 to 6 weeks until the hair grows back again. The benefits of waxing are its ready availability and relatively inexpensive cost. The downside of waxing is having to wait until the hair is long enough to be waxed, and the need to repeat the process within a few weeks. Waxing can also cause ingrown hairs and the waxed areas will regularly need to be exfoliated.
Permanent hair removal
There are a number of permanent hair removal treatments available in Australia.
Electrolysis
One method of permanent hair removal is electrolysis, whereby a fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle and an electrical current is used to destroy the hair at the root. Electrolysis is effective, however it can be a lengthy process as only a single hair can be treated at a time and it may as a consequence be impractical to remove hair from large areas.
Laser
Laser hair removal has become very popular and is readily available throughout Australia. There are various types of laser and the process involves use of a laser light to penetrate the skin in order to destroy the hair follicle. There are different grades and strengths of lasers available so you will need to seek more information about the specific lasers used by your local laser hair clinics. Lasers do have their limitations as they will only work on hairs with dark pigmentation, so whites and greys will not be removed. It is also not suitable for many olive or dark skinned people.
