You don’t have to head to a beauty salon or a day spa for the best in skin care. Nor do you need to use expensive top shelf products.
With a few simple ingredients that are easy to find in your local supermarket or health-food store, you can make DIY facials and beauty treatments that smell (and taste!) so good, you won’t want to go to the salon again!
Hydrating Yogurt Face Mask
This mask contains three of Mother Nature’s superheroes of skin care. Thick, creamy yogurt contains lactic acid which is a natural exfoliator; honey’s anti-bacterial and hydrating properties have been recognised for millennia; while sweet almond oil is rich in vitamin E, antioxidants and nourishing fatty acids.
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 2 teaspoons organic honey
- 1 teaspoon sweet almond oil
Combine the ingredients into a paste. Apply a generous layer to your face and leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water.
Papaya Oil-Removing Face Mask
Epsom salts are a terrific exfoliator and help to remove dirt and oil from pores; papaya brightens skin and promotes skin renewal and regeneration, while yogurt calms and nourishes. This treatment first uses steam to open the pores, and then a hydrating mask is applied to nourish and refresh the skin.
- 1 ripe papaya
- 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup Epsom salts
- 1 peppermint tea bag
Cut up the papaya and use a blender to create a smooth paste. Stir in yogurt and set aside. Dissolve Epsom salts in a large pot of water. Bring to a boil; add teabag and remove from heat. Steam your pores by holding your face over the pot for 3 minutes, with your head covered by a towel to seal in the steam. Then spread the papaya mask over your face. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
Green Tea Eye Treatment
The skin around our eyes needs special care because it is so delicate. Lack of sleep, poor diet, too much screen time, and allergens all play their role in making eyes red and the skin around them puffy and dark. Try this rescue remedy to alleviate those dark circles. Green tea is loaded with anti-oxidants and can shrink swelling and reduce puffiness by tightening the skin around the eyes.
Follow the compress with a moisturizer made from jojoba oil, famed for its moisturizing properties; and pure shea butter, which is full of vitamin A, E and essential fatty acids. It has valuable moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties. While it’s too rich to use as a face cream, it will nourish the tender eye area if used sparingly.
- 1 1/2 teaspoons jojoba oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoons pure shea butter
- 1 cup boiling water
- 2 green tea bags
Mix jojoba oil and shea butter in a small bowl and set aside. Steep tea bags for a few seconds in the boiling water, then squeeze and cool, until comfortable to the touch. Place a green tea bag under each eye. Relax for ten minutes. Remove bags and gently dab jojoba balm to the skin around the eyes.Mix jojoba oil and shea butter in a small bowl and set aside. Lemon Lip Scrub
Not only does lemon juice provide a zesty tang to this lip scrub, but its renowned antibacterial, cleansing and lightening properties can also be used as a clarifying moisturizer, for treating blackheads and as a skin toner. While it’s great as an exfoliator in this recipe, avoid using it if your lips are very chapped or cut. After exfoliating, enjoy using this lip balm to keep your lips soft and moist.
- 1 1/2 teaspoons honey
- 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
- Juice of 1/4 lemon
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- Contents of 1 vitamin E capsule
- 1 drop lemon essential oil
In a bowl, mix honey, sugar and lemon juice. Rub over lips with finger in a circular motion to exfoliate; rinse. Combine remaining ingredients in another bowl. Dab on lips. Store any extra in the fridge for up to a week.
Brown Sugar Body Scrub
Brown sugar makes a wonderful body scrub, not least because it smells wonderful. It’s full of glycolic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid that is important in skin care and which conditions and moisturizes skin. Coupled with the benefits of coconut oil, this sugar scrub is a delicious way to slough off the daily grind. Coconut oil, which is widely recognized as a beauty superhero, is used for its hydrating, cleansing and moisturizing properties. It can be used on skin or hair.
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup virgin coconut oil
- 10 drops essential rose and/or sandalwood oil
In a glass bowl add essential oil(s) to the sugar and stir thoroughly. Add coconut oil gradually, stirring continuously. Stop when the scrub reaches the consistency of moist sand. Use this scrub before rinsing off in the shower.
Coffee Body Scrub
Caffeine tightens loose skin, so after making an espresso in the morning, use the grounds in your morning beauty regime. This deliciously scented scrub is great for those that want to improve circulation and the visibility of cellulite, while the coconut and olive oils hydrate and soften the skin.
- 1/4 raw sugar
- 1/4 cup ground coffee
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon sea salt
Mix all ingredients together and place in an air-tight container. Massage the scrub into your skin before rinsing off in the shower. This scrub can be stored for up to two months in an air-tight container.
Shea & Avocado Body Cream
After exfoliating, you’ll want to hydrate your skin. This simple recipe makes an incredibly moisturizing body butter. The avocado oil is rich in anti-oxidants such as vitamin A, E and D, which help make dry skin feel supple, and also contains natural collagen-boosting sterolins.
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 2 tablespoons avocado oil
- 5-10 drops lavender essential oil
Mix shea butter and avocado oil in a pan over low heat, stirring until melted. Pour into a small sealable container. Add as much lavender as you like. Refrigerate until creamy. Use freely on clean, dry skin.
Peppermint & Strawberry Foot Scrub
This scrub is so yummy it might not make it to your feet! The peppermint oil will invigorate and refresh tired skin, while the naturally occurring alpha-hydroxy acid in the strawberries will help slough off dead skin cells – leaving your feet soft and smelling sweet.
- 4 strawberries
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 8 drops peppermint essential oil
Puree berries in a small bowl, then add sugar and olive and vegetable oils. Mix until well blended. Add peppermint oil 2 drops at a time until scrub smells minty. Massage into feet, then leave for a few minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
