What types of prams are popular?
Index
When it comes to a baby pram (also known as pushchairs, buggies or strollers) it is important to find one with features that are suited to you and your lifestyle.
This is why the most popular prams are usually ones that are versatile and durable.
Before you can begin to understand popularity of different prams, you need to understand the variety available. Price ranges vary quite drastically according to the features available, which can range from simple and necessary to extremely sophisticated.
Features to consider in a pram include:
- Width
- Weight
- Colour
- Number of wheels (three/four usually)
- Safety harnesses
- Car seat compatibility
- Ease of folding
- Space for storage (such as for shopping bags/baby toys)
- Braking systems
- Durability of materials
- Sun protection
- Versatility of carriage for when baby grows
- Stability and suspension (especially if using as a jogger)
- High-tech features (such as LCD screens, phone charging capacity, automatic folding etc.)
Obviously the importance of different features will vary for different parents and for different budgets. Popularity can be skewed for different markets according to the prices they can afford the requirements of that region. For example, families that have a more active lifestyle and want to go jogging with their babies are more likely to buy a pram that has good stability and suspension, without worrying so much about the size or weight of the pram.
Higher income families, or those with lots of technological requirements, may choose to go for an expensive pram, decked out with an LCD screen that gives them details such as the weather, the speed of the pram and how far the stroller has travelled. It also depends on the size or expected size of the family. A family with only one child is unlikely to buy the prams that have room for two or more children. While a family with twins will definitely need to buy a twin stroller.
Because there are so many varying and specific features for prams, it can be difficult to determine the most popular ones. Different baby stores will promote different buggies and different cots according to the market that they are targeting. However, it is possible to note a few features that are common across the board in popular prams, regardless of the more specific features.
Durability is a major factor, in both the mechanisms of the pram as well as the fabrics that the actual cots are made from. Versatility also seems to be a key feature – if a stroller can be converted from a bassinet to a toddler-sized chair, it is generally more popular than one made just for a particular stage of a child’s development. Also, many popular strollers will have the option of buying an extra cot at the baby shop that will attach, making the pram either for one child or two.
Since most parents will being doing a fair bit of shopping and travelling, collapsibility and storage space seem to go hand-in-hand. Popular strollers will often have easy folding mechanisms to easily store in the car or closet. They will also usually have space either underneath the seat or behind it to store shopping and other necessary items (such as baby toys, baby clothes etc.).
Of course, just like most fashion or cars, baby buggies go in an out of vogue quite frequently. New technology can change the way strollers are made and new fashion trends can change what is considered ‘stylish’ and therefore the popularity of prams. If you are searching for the most up to date information on popular prams, you are best going down to baby stores or to a baby shop and talking to a salesperson in-store, or viewing the latest products on websites of your favourite baby stores and the many online parenting sites, forums and blogs.
